Hunting Writers in Arkansas: Horace Kephart 1895

Director of the St. Louis Mercantile Library Horace Kephart and some companions traveled to Arkansas in 1895, publishing an account of the adventure called “Lost in the Swamps” in Forest and Stream.  Kephart later became widely known as an advocate for the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee with the publication of Our Southern Highlanders (1913) and author of several outdoor books including Camp Cookery (1910) and Sporting Firearms (1912).  Kephart became lost several times near the Black River while hunting with his friend S. D. Barnes.[1]
