Early Arkansas Hunters: Large Group on Horseback

Mississippi native Byrd S. Griffin (October 1853-1916) was a farmer who lived in Warren, Columbia County, in 1880. The information does not indentify Griffin in this photo other than to say that he is in this large hunting group in Arkansas before 1900. I would guess that it was between 1880 and 1900. These hunters have a large contingent of hunting hounds. A hunt like this might be after deer, panthers, bear, or hogs. There is a cabin the background indicating that this is probably someones farm. Because of the condition of the photograph (source: Ancestry), it is difficult to determine much detail about these men and their gear. Suffice to say that they have rifles, shotguns, and of we could see clearer, probably a hunting horn or several. Specific information about Griffin is from the 1860 and 1880 US Census.
