Early Arkansas Hunters: Lindabury on Mt. Magazine

Charles Emmet Lindabury was born on March 27, 1870, in Michigan, but in 1897, he purchased land in Taney County, Missouri(U.S., General Land Office Records, 1776-2015). In 1899, he was appointed postmaster in Christian County, Missouri (U.S., Appointments of U. S. Postmasters, 1832-1971). By 1910, he was farming in Crawford County, Arkansas, with his wife Francis and five children. The next US Census lists him in Blue Mountain, Arkansas, at the southern foot of Mt. Magazine. This picture was taken at Slocum Place, which sits atop Mt. Magazine on the north side. I would venture, although not identified, that he has three of his sons with him (William, Fred, and Robert). I would estimate the photograph is from the late 1910s or early 1920s when the family was living in Blue Mountain.

They have quite the food spread in front of them. A small corral with horses, two saddles hanging off the hut, and a hunting dog are in the photograph. Two long guns sit on the extreme lower left of the lean-to (looks like a .22 and a single-shot shotgun). The hut says T. H 101. It appears like a rental. The photograph mentions Tom Halys (I believe) Ranch. Also written on the photograph is the location along with “[Unintellegiable] Artists,” so we can determine that this was staged. It was possibly taken for an advertisement for the Haly Ranch because it looks like a camping rental outfit. Image Source: Ancestry
